O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when the singer was still in high school. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges for her performance. O'Neil was praised highly by judges, but she suffered significant losses in the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 respectively. Judges were amazed by her performance and recommended viewers to select those who sing well, such as Melissa. O'Neil did not make it to the bottom 3 again after an impressive string of performances. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after two more stunning performances that O'Neil was going to be the winner in the Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and the youngest contestant in history, following the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol immediately.
